WHAT IS THE GBB BONUS SCHEME?

We think it is important that our filly syndicates are eligible for the GBB bonus scheme, so what exactly does that mean? It covers both Flat and Jumps, but we will focus on how it affects us on the Flat.

Basically, the scheme is open to all British-born filly foals, to incentivise the breeding and racing of these fillies, by awarding GBB bonuses of up to £20,000 per race – in addition to normal prize money! The scheme pays out over £5million in bonuses each year. The scheme is open to GB fillies who are:

• Sired by stallions standing in GB (GBB 100%) – eligible for up to £100,000 bonuses.
• Sired by stallions standing abroad (GBB 50%) – eligible for up to £50,000 bonuses

The scheme is funded by the Horserace Betting Levy Board and from registration fees paid by owners and breeders. For each filly we pay three separate fees totalling £1250:

• Stage 1 Foal registration (£475 by 30 September in the foal year)
• Stage 2 Yearling registration (£275 by 31 May in the yearling year)
• Stage 3 Owner registration (£500 by 28 February in the 2YO year)

A registered filly can win multiple bonuses, subject to a total cap of £100,000. On the Flat, a filly can win as a 2YO and a 3YO, and in the case of staying fillies, can also win as a 4YO.

All connections of winning fillies benefit from a GBB win, with bonuses split as follows:

• 65% to the racing owner (i.e. the syndicate)
• 10% to the breeder
• 10% to the yearling owner
• 7.5% to the trainer
• 5% to the jockey and
• 2.5% to the stable staff

INCREASED GBB BONUS BENEFITS FROM 2025!!

The GBB Scheme is also getting bigger and better this year. GBBPLUS is an extension of GBB, which introduced two new separate initiatives from 1 January 2025.

The current scheme will continue with £20,000 bonuses per race, while GBBPLUS will offer ADDITIONAL incentives for middle-distance and staying-bred fillies.

For certain types of Flat races, GBBPLUS will offer an ADDITIONAL bonus of up to £20,000 for registered fillies whose covering fee was £50,000 or less. So for these races the GBB bonus payment will be worth up to £40,000 to a filly! These races are:

• Class 2-4 maiden, novice and conditions races at eight furlongs and over for two-year-olds, and at 10 furlongs and over for three-year-olds.
• For 2-Year-olds, GBBPLUS also pays out the extra bonus in nurseries eight furlongs and over.
• For three- and four-year-olds, GBBPLUS pays out in class 2-4 handicaps at 10 furlongs and over. (In this case ONLY the extension bonus is payable, so these races are worth up to £20,000.
• Seven Listed races (fillies-only, 10-furlong and over) will also offer a bonus of £20,000.

Every year there are thousands of races eligible for a GBB bonus payout. Over 550 of these offer the highest levels of bonuses available. That is why it is so important for us to aim for these races and ensure that the fillies we syndicate are GBB registered!
