We had a lot of different suggestions – and two separate votes! – but the members of our latest syndicate finally decided on their preferred name for our gelding by Heeraat out of the Grand Lodge mare Almaviva.

In the end it was a close-run thing between two names and the winning name WAS going to be based on the location of the vineyard in Chile where the Almaviva wine is produced.

After the vote, we were thrown a curve ball when a breeder who had seen the gelding in the paddocks rang us to say what a fine horse we had on our hands, because of how well he moved – he covers the ground so effortlessly, and is very light on his feet for such a big strong horse. He then suggested that we should call him “Floats On Air” because of his graceful movement. 

After a lot of thought, all previous suggestions were thrown out of the window. Owners were very taken with the new name, particularly when they learned that a few years ago, that same breeder had seen a horse belonging to Michael Owen and remarked that he moved like a panther. The former footballer went on to name his horse Brown Panther, who achieved great things in the UK and abroad. Let’s hope Floats On Air proves to be just as successful!
